Part 1:
here we are going to use an old linux utility chntpw to reset user password
Requirements
- Physical access to the windows box.
- CD drive nd cd bootable bios settings.
- Live linux boot disk with most common disk drivers and chntpw download it from here.
- A little time.
- Download the 3mb linux image from above link.
- Extract the zip file to get the iso image.
- Burn iso image using ur favorite burner.
- Change bios settings to boot from cd drive before HDD.
- If bios is protected with password, remove case find the battery on motherboard, take it out, u may also change jumper near to it.
- put the newly burned cd to drive, restart the computer,
- when promted like "boot:" just hit enter (depends on ur hardware)
- it will list the disk drives found...
- enter the number corresponding to windows partion + enter
- when promted for path, /windows/system32/config is the deafult hit enter
- choose password rest on the next option.
- then edit user data and passwords
- it will list all users on the system, enter the user name or RID which s shown right of each user.
- Now u will option to set/reset password, promote user etc. best choice is to reset password of admin since set passwrd may not work in xp or higher
- u can repeat for more users . at end quit by "!".
- again quit by "q", it will ask for saving changes press "y".
